Lowe's addresses customer service with iPhone apps | SmartPlanet

How do you maintain the customer service you became known for as a small, corner hardware store when your company has grown into a massive, nationwide home improvement retailer?

Lowe?s hopes at least part of the answer lies in a series of new custom applications for the Apple iPhone that its employees are now using to help customers.

The retailer talks about its iPhone installation ? more than 42,000 in all ? in a new case study published this week on the Apple Web site. The investment includes three applications, two for its employees and one for customers.

On the corporate side, there is one application that helps employees work with customers on store floors to find materials, products and tools that the might need for a project. The application lets employees see when an item is out of stock and when it is expected to arrive at the store; or, alternatively, whether or not a customer might be able to find the item in another nearby Lowe?s location.

Lowe?s Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer (CIO) Mike Brown commented on how the application was able to help a customer who needed an out-of-stock product. ?A store manager was able to look where the inventory was, order the product in 10 seconds, and solve the customers? problem,? Brown said in Apple?s case study. ??The customer was absolutely blown away at the simplicity and how fast that could happen in a Lowe?s store.?

Lowe?s store managers also are using a new iPhone application that allows them to review price changes, check up on sales reports, evaluate the status of new products and when they will arrive in the store, and so on. The idea is to keep managers more visible out in front of customers and employees, rather than stuck in a back room at a desktop computer.

Lowe?s employees are now using more than 42,000 iPhones in stores; updates are pushed to the mobile devices via the company?s information technology (IT) organization, Brown said.

The customer-facing application that the Lowe?s IT organization has developed includes home improvement tips and ideas, along with how-to videos, product reviews, a store location finder, and a feature that lets customers see how much money they have on any outstanding gift cards.

While it might be hard to measure the bottom line impact of an investment like this one, the mobile apps allow employees to get a lot more face-time with customers. ?In all of my 27 years at Lowe?s, iPhone will go down as being the most impactful device we have ever put in our employees? hands,? Brown said.

Fear grows in O.C. cities near San Onofre nuclear plant

Concern over the safety of the San Onofre nuclear power plant is growing among Orange County cities closest to the facility, which has been shut down since January because of system failures.

Officials in nearby San Clemente and Laguna Beach ? both within 20 miles of the San Onofre facility ? have registered their fears after significant wear was found on hundreds of tubes carrying radioactive water inside the plant's generators.

Residents in the Orange County beach towns for years have lived with the twin-domed nuclear plant as a backdrop. In San Clemente, which falls within the plant's 10-mile evacuation zone, city-issued potassium iodide tablets and siren drills have become a fact of life.

But with scenes of the nuclear disaster in Japan fresh in people's minds, the recent closure has raised consciousness about nuclear issues and prompted critics to double down on their disapproval.

Some city officials are now calling for the decommissioning of the San Onofre site. The plant's license is set to expire in 2022.

"The plant should be shut down, period," said Verna Rollinger, mayor pro tem in Laguna Beach. "I have never supported it, and I wish nuclear energy was safe because it's a relatively clean energy source, but it's also so dangerous that I don't think we should be counting on that for our future energy needs."

She added: "I think people are concerned, and for good reason."

The mayor of San Clemente, Lori Donchak, wrote to federal officials asking that they demand a permanent disposal place for spent nuclear fuel, and others have asked that they consider expanding the evacuation zone beyond the current 10-mile radius.

Federal regulatory officials said the facility remains safe and the process to repair the damaged tubes is part of the effort to ensure those living nearby aren't endangered.

"San Onofre is being operated safely ? that's the bottom line," said Victor Dricks, a spokesman for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

But now that the facility has been off-line for some time, with power still flowing to homes and businesses without interruption, some have asked why it needs to come back into service. "The question is," Rollinger said, "how difficult would it be to go without it?"

Southern California Edison, which operates the San Onofre facility, said San Onofre is vital to providing electricity to a densely populated, high-consuming area like Southern California, with 20% of the region's electricity coming from nuclear plants.

"San Onofre is critical to that grid stability," said Jennifer Manfrey, a company spokeswoman, who added that the company is making up for the difference by purchasing power from different sources on the market ? a solution that can't continue indefinitely, particularly with the increase in consumption in the summer months. Other clean energy sources, such as wind and solar, aren't enough to close the gap.

But Marion Pack, a political organizer who opposes the facility, said the price for that energy source remains too high. "When you have to have all these safety measures," she said, "it says to me there is an inherent danger."

RIM posts loss as new CEO begins to clean house

TORONTO (Reuters) - Research In Motion posted a net loss and its first slump in BlackBerry shipments for its holiday quarter since 2006, as its new CEO announced the initial steps in a strategic overhaul and would not rule out an eventual sale of the company.

RIM's shares dropped as much as 9 percent on Thursday after the company said it would no longer issue financial forecasts and was reviewing "strategic opportunities" such as partnerships and joint-venture licensing, and other ways to leverage its assets. A handful of senior executives, including former co-CEO and current director Jim Balsillie, will depart.

Chief Executive Thorsten Heins, who took over from Balsillie and co-CEO Mike Lazaridis in January, said he was still focusing on a turnaround of the company, which has been hammered by competition from Apple and Google's Android in recent years.

Even so, if the review pointed in the direction of a possible sale, he said, "We would consider it, but it is not the main direction we are pursuing right now."

"I did my own reality check on where the entire company really is," he said during a conference call with analysts. "It is now very clear to me that substantial change is what RIM needs."

After Heins spoke, RIM's shares settled about 2.4 percent lower, in part because he left open the option of partnerships that analysts said could allow the company to exit some aspects of its business, such as making hardware, while focusing on software and services.

"If you look at this quarter alone ... things are certainly incrementally worse. But on the flip side, he's raised some possibilities of strategy change, which a lot of people think is called for," Avian Securities analyst Matthew Thornton said.

Investors may also have been encouraged by signs that Heins was putting his stamp on the company. RIM said Balsillie, who long served as RIM's public face, was stepping down as a board director a few weeks after he gave up his role as co-CEO.

Dan Dodge, former head of QNX Software, will replace David Yach as RIM's top software architect. RIM bought QNX in 2010 and is counting on the operating system to power its PlayBook tablet and redesigned BlackBerry 10 smartphones that will be launched later this year.

In addition, Jim Rowan also left as chief operating officer and RIM is looking for his replacement. It is still searching for a chief marketing officer to lead its promotional efforts.

BLACKBERRY SHIPMENTS SLUMP

The Waterloo, Ontario-based company shipped 11.1 million BlackBerry smartphones in the fiscal fourth quarter ended March 3, down 21 percent from the third quarter, but slightly ahead of analysts' pessimistic expectations.

It was the first decline in the quarter covering Christmas since 2006 and only the second time RIM has reported the metric dropping for that crucial period.

RIM sold more than 500,000 PlayBooks in the fourth quarter, a number inflated by deep discounts offered to boost sales of the product.

The decline in BlackBerry shipments suggests that RIM, at best, is treading water until it releases its next-generation of BlackBerry smartphones. Most analysts consider that a do-or-die launch for the company as it falls further behind Apple Inc's iPhone and iPad and devices powered by Google's Android.

"PAYING THE PRICE"

The company is now paying the price for failing to heed calls to move quickly to license its operating system and consider other strategies to compete with industry titan Apple, said Peter Misek, managing director of Jefferies & Co.

"It's going to be absolute gong show for the next few quarters," he said. "They're going to scramble around now for the next three to six months, and every poor shareholder that had faith in them is going to be potentially impoverished. I'm so angry as a Canadian - every Canadian investor should be angry."

While analysts generally approved of the more candid tone by Heins compared with that of his predecessors, most questioned if the new CEO would have enough time to pull off his plans.

"RIM has to orchestrate this turnaround within a shrinking window of opportunity. The market will determine how long that window stays open," said CCS Insight analyst John Jackson.

"Ultimately, RIM is taking half measures, baby-stepping their way to a reorganization and they're not moving fast enough," said Ed Snyder, an analyst with Charter Equity Research. "They need a wholesale change in the culture and the management of the company."

GUIDANCE WITHHELD

RIM said its decision to no longer provide specific financial guidance reflected an inability to forecast accurately given the weakness of its U.S. business and competitive pressure in global markets as it increasingly relies on sales of more low-end devices.

RIM, which has historically provided a forecast for BlackBerry shipments, earnings per share and revenue, has faced scathing criticism in the past year for missing its targets. Last year it stopped reporting average selling prices and subscriber additions.

For its fourth quarter, RIM reported a net loss of $125 million, or 24 cents a share, after booking writedowns on its legacy BlackBerry 7 phones and goodwill.

RIM last recorded a loss under generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2005, when it booked tax expenses and paid to resolve a patent infringement case that had threatened to shut down its U.S. operations.

On an adjusted basis excluding the writedowns, profit in the latest quarter more than halved to $418 million, or 80 cents a share, from $934 million, or $1.78, a year earlier. Revenue slumped to $4.19 billion from $5.56 billion.

Analysts, on average, had expected RIM to earn 81 cents a share on revenue of $4.54 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Excluding several major writedowns, RIM had adjusted earnings of $4.20 per share in the full fiscal year, after forecasting a year ago it would earn more than $7.50 a share.

That target was cut several times before RIM abandoned it altogether after a spate of product delays, a global service outage and disappointing shipment numbers.

"They clearly have no fix on when this process will bottom, and until it really does, it's going to be very difficult for a lot of investors to come back in," said Eric Jackson, a hedge fund manager at Ironfire Capital in New York.

Shares of RIM were trading down 2.4 percent at $13.40 after the bell. Soon after the company released its results, the stock fell as much as 9 percent. The shares have fallen 80 percent since February 2011.

Hiring of CEO revives Augusta membership debate

As a club that prides itself on tradition, Augusta National again is in the middle of a membership debate it thought it was done with nearly a decade ago.

Just seven days before the Masters, no less.

The last four chief executives of IBM ? a longtime corporate sponsor of the Masters ? have been members of the exclusive golf club in Augusta, Ga. The latest CEO of the computer giant happens to be a woman. Virginia Rometty was appointed this year.

One problem ? a woman has never worn a member's green jacket since Augusta National opened in 1933.

"I think they're both in a bind," Martha Burk said Thursday evening.

Burk, who spearheaded an unsuccessful campaign 10 years ago for the club to admit a female member, said Friday morning on CNN she fears Augusta and IBM will work out a "sham solution" to make the issue go away.

"The company has a huge responsibility here not to undermine its first female CEO," Burk said. "If they accept anything less than full member ? or resign their sponsorship, which is another option ? they're going to undermine their new CEO. And they'll be making a statement that they don't consider her an equal to her predecessors."

Still to be determined is how much traction the topic will muster going into the Masters.

Augusta National, through a spokesman, declined comment in keeping to its policy that membership issues are private. IBM did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.

Rometty is said to play golf sparingly. Her greater passion is scuba diving.

Hootie Johnson, chairman of the club a decade ago, ignited the controversy back then when he said that while Augusta might one day have a female member, it would be on the club's timetable and "not at the point of a bayonet."

Burk applied pressure on just about everyone connected with the club and with the Masters, the major championship that garners the highest TV ratings. She demanded that four companies drop their television sponsorship because of discrimination. She lobbied PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem not to recognize the Masters as part of the tour schedule.

It didn't work. The protest fizzled in a parking lot down the street from the club during the third round of the 2003 tournament.

"We did raise the issue," Burk said on CNN. "If we had not done that, this would not be on the table now."

Not only is the debate back, this time it has a face ? Rometty, a 31-year veteran of IBM who has been ranked among the "50 Most Powerful Women in Business" by Fortune magazine the last seven years. Rometty was No. 7 last year.

The chairman of Augusta National ? and the Masters ? is Billy Payne, who ran the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. When he replaced Johnson as chairman of the club and of the Masters tournament in 2006, he said there was "no specific timetable" for admitting women.

The question was raised at the 2007 and 2010 Masters. Both times, Payne said membership issues were private.

Rometty succeeds Sam Palmissano at IBM, which runs the Masters' website from the bottom floor of the media center. According to a list published by USA Today in 2002, the three CEOs prior to Palmissano also were members ? Louis Gertsner, John Akers and John Opel.

As the corporate sponsors became the target, Johnson wound up doing away with TV sponsorship for two years at the Masters to keep the corporate partners ? IBM, Coca-Cola and Citigroup ? out of the fray.

Only IBM returned as a TV sponsor for the 2005 Masters. The others were SBC Communications and ExxonMobil.

Burk said it should not be that easy for IBM to hide if the debate gains momentum.

"What IBM needs to do is draw a line in the sand ? 'We're either going to pull our sponsorship and membership and any ancillary activities we support with the tournament, or the club is going to have to honor our CEO the way they have in the past,'" Burk said in a telephone interview Thursday evening. "There's no papering over it. They just need to step up and do the right thing.

"They need to not pull that argument that they support the tournament and not the club," she said. "That does not fool anybody, and they could undermine their new CEO."

Burk said she would not be surprised if IBM pressured Rometty to say she doesn't want to be a member.

"Really, I don't think it's her responsibility," Burk said. "It's the board of directors. They need to take action here. They don't need to put that on her. They need to say, 'This is wrong. We thought the club was on the verge of making changes several years ago, and we regretfully end our sponsorship to maintain her credibility and the company brand.'"

The debate returns just in time for one of the most anticipated Masters in years. Tiger Woods finally returned to winning form last week at Bay Hill and is considered one of the favorites, along with U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy. Eight of the top 20 players in the world ranking have won heading into the first major of the year, a list that includes world No. 1 Luke Donald and Phil Mickelson.

Now comes a sensitive issue that dogged the tournament a decade ago, and might not go away easily. Women can play the course at Augusta National, but cannot join the club or wear the Augusta green jacket, which is reserved for members and stands as a status symbol in business and golf.

Rometty could become a central figure in the argument over female membership whether she wishes to or not.

"We have a face, we have a resume, we have a title and we have a credible reason to do it that doesn't involve Martha Burk," Burk said.

Burk said she is no longer chair of the National Council of Women's Organizations. She had planned to step down until the first flap with the Masters began in the summer of 2002. NATO: Member nations should share military systems

SIAULIAI AIR BASE, Lithuania (AP) ? Two F-4 Phantom jet fighters under NATO control streaked off the runway at a former Soviet air base in Lithuania this week in response to a report that an aircraft had lost communications as it neared Finnish airspace.

It was all an exercise ? a simulation ? but one with a point beyond mere rehearsal: NATO officials hope that, at a summit in Chicago this May, member nations will put aside concerns over sovereignty and agree in principle to create joint defense capabilities.

The idea is that, in a time of dwindling defense budgets, it makes sense to have coordinated programs in which specific countries agree to buy certain weapons systems ? and forgo others ? to create a coherent whole.

The economic arguments are strong. Twenty of NATO's 28 member countries cut their defense budgets between 2008 and 2011. And greater military integration in Europe would be of a piece with the greater economic integration that is emerging as a response to the continent's financial crisis.

But defense is a closely guarded national prerogative, and the outcome is far from certain. A NATO official said earlier this week that no specifics would emerge from the summit in Chicago.

Instead, he said, NATO officials hope for a "public declaration of how far we're prepared to go as an alliance." He spoke on condition of anonymity because of NATO rules.

The exercise in Lithuania involved German F-4 Phantom fighter planes at a Lithuanian air base cooperating with F-18 Hornet fighters from Finland ? a country that cooperates with NATO but is not a member.

Since 2004, different NATO countries have been policing the airspace over the Baltic countries, all three of which ? Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia ? are small former Soviet republics that are now members of NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

In microcosm, the security arrangements for the Baltics are similar to what NATO officials wish for the entire alliance. The three Baltic countries cannot do their own air policing. Lithuania, for example, used to have six L-39 training jets. But four have been grounded, one has crashed, and now the country's air force is down to just one jet.

The defense budget is shrinking, and fighter planes cost many millions of dollars each.

"Buying aircraft today is something out of my fantasy," Col. Antanas Jucius, chief of staff of the Lithuanian Air Force, told The Associated Press.

So other NATO countries, on four-month rotations, do the Baltics' air policing. And the Baltic countries do what they can. All three have sent troops to Afghanistan.

In the exercise Wednesday, a Lithuanian transport plane simulated losing communications. It was intercepted by the Finnish fighters, who assessed the problem, then turned control of the plane over to the two German Phantoms from NATO, who escorted it to Siauliai Air Base, where it was cleared to land by a Lithuanian air traffic controller.

The stress of shrinking budgets does not necessarily mean that national governments will agree to a coordinated way of deciding which country does what. During the Cold War, NATO tried to implement similar joint programs involving naval vessels, armored vehicles, munitions, and communications and other equipment, but achieved only limited success.

"We've been talking about this forever," said Jan Techau, director of Carnegie Europe, which studies such issues. He believes such sharing of capabilities is essential, but he is doubtful it will happen.

"Now, in the financial crisis, everybody's broke," Techau said. "It's ever more urgent, but it collides with the sovereignty, which is strongest in the defense sector, as we know. Nothing ever happens out of sheer necessity in politics."

Still, budgets are shrinking almost by the day. Earlier this year, Austria's defense minister has confirmed plans to sell two-thirds of the army's tanks. Last month, Italy's foreign minister announced that he had cut an order for F-35 fighter jets from 131 to 90, and that the number of warships and submarines would also be cut. Poland's prime minister said a plan to build a new Gawron class warship had been canceled.

A spokesman said last week the Czech Defense Ministry has 20 percent less funding this year than in 2009, and will dramatically cut its planned purchase of Belgian-made Minimi machine guns.

And just this week, Spanish Defense Minister Pedro Morenes said he expects his slice of the pie to be cut by 12 to 14 percent when the country's new budget is unveiled Friday.

NATO's top military commander, Adm. James Stavridis, said this week there are obvious areas where sharing resources makes sense, including joint use of helicopters and strategic airlift assets; intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance; air-to-air refueling capability; and special operations.

There is no doubt that such cooperation would involve significant changes in the way decisions are made. Germany, for example, requires parliamentary approval before military assets can be used. But if other countries forgo certain military systems because they are relying instead on Germany, they would want assurance that those systems would be deployed quickly ? and with certainty ? in the event of an emergency in their home countries.

And NATO planners continue to hope for a strong declaration of political intent from the summit in Chicago.

"The ground has changed," the NATO official said.

Pope to meet Mexico president and faithful

Pope Benedict XVI meets with Mexican President Felipe Calderon and the faithful Saturday, after condemning the "evil" of drug gangs and praying for victims in the violence-plagued country.

Crowds of cheering, flag-waving faithful welcomed the pontiff Friday as he made his 20-mile (34-kilometer) journey to the city of Leon in the white Popemobile after landing in the central, heavily Catholic state of Guanajuato.

In only his second trip to the world's most Catholic continent, the pope, who turns 85 next month, is visiting Silao, Leon and Guanajuato in Mexico before spending two days in communist Cuba.

"Brother Benedict, now you're Mexican," shouted young people wearing white t-shirts bearing images of the pope, as mariachi musicians played at the airport.

Benedict comes to a Mexican church battling to extend its influence while faced with setbacks that include legalized abortion and gay marriage in the Mexican capital.

Although he did not address those issues directly, Benedict cautiously referred to the "incomparable dignity of every human being, created by God, which no one has the right to forget or disregard."

"This dignity is expressed especially in the fundamental right to freedom of religion, in its full meaning and integrity," he said on his incoming flight.

The pontiff also alluded to the strong Catholic traditions of the region, where a Catholic rebellion in the 1920s saw the faithful take up arms against laws that stripped the church of power.

Guanajuato is a stronghold of President Felipe Calderon's conservative National Action Party (PAN), which has roots in Catholic organizations.

The visit comes amid debate over new legislation, which Calderon's government is backing, to end restrictions on religious ceremonies in public places and a ban on religious involvement in politics.

Although Mexico is numerically the world's second most-Catholic nation -- where 84 percent of the population has been baptized -- Catholic numbers have dropped in recent years, partly due to the rise of rival religious movements.

Benedict said he would pray "particularly for those who suffer... all forms of violence," with expectations high for a strong message of peace amid a wave of drug violence that has left some 50,000 dead in five years.

He also called for efforts "to fight this evil which destroys our young," referring to drug gang culture.

Mexican authorities promised maximum security during the visit, with some 5,400 security forces deployed, while the archbishop of Leon even called on local drug gangs to agree to a truce.

The pope was set to face criticism over the clerical abuse scandal, particularly the Vatican's management of Mexico's most notorious offender, Marcial Maciel, the founder of the Legion of Christ order who died in 2008.

Mexican victims of the sexual abuse were disappointed that he had no plans to meet them.

Some 700,000 visitors were in the region for the sixth papal visit to Mexico, after five by the charismatic John Paul II, in whose shadow the trip inevitably took place.

A highlight of the visit was expected to be a huge mass Sunday in the regional Bicentennial Park, which sits below a towering statue of Christ the King.

In Cuba, the pope will also seek to follow in the footsteps of John Paul II, who was credited with strengthening the church's relationship to the state and urging the communist island to open up, though it remains highly isolated.

Benedict said that Marxism "no longer corresponds to reality" and called for "new models" amid so far timid changes in the communist regime, on the journey to Mexico.

Cuba's Catholic community -- which makes up around 10 percent of the population -- is willing "to help create a constructive dialogue to avoid traumas," he said.

Dissidents have held a series of protests aimed at pressuring the pope into tackling the government on rights.

Benedict's visit commemorates the 400th anniversary of Cuba's patron saint Our Lady of Charity, a statue of Mary found in the sea who is revered for her miracles.

The pope hopes to encourage religious fervor after more than 40 years of official atheism ended in the early 1990s, and a big turnout is expected among Catholics at masses on the island.
