Howard Stern joins 'America's Got Talent'

Radio personality Howard Stern is joining "America's Got Talent."

Shortly after the first rumors surfaced about the possibility of Howard Stern joining "America's Got Talent," the self-proclaimed King of All Media predicted that he'd outperform past panelist David Hasselhoff. While few Stern fans could doubt that, he'll soon have a chance to prove it to "Got Talent" viewers.
On Thursday morning, NBC announced that it's official: Stern will get a spot on the panel.
(FYI: TODAY.com is powered by msnbc.com, which is a joint venture between Microsoft and NBC Universal.)
Paul Telegdy, president of alternative and late night programming for NBC, said, "Howard Stern?s larger-than-life personality will bring a thrilling new dynamic to ?America?s Got Talent? starting this summer. He?s a proven innovator and his track record in broadcasting is truly remarkable. Howard is very passionate about this show and is fully committed to its future success.?
Stern will be stepping in to replace former "Got Talent" judge Piers Morgan, who decided the reality TV competition was just too much to juggle with his CNN show.
On Stern's Thursday morning Sirius XM radio show, the shock jock confirmed the news.
The show's official Twitter feed has since featured updates.
"Howard says he'll start shooting in February and actually be traveling the country to do the audition rounds. ?#H100 ?#AGT," one update read.
Howard Stern, the shock jock known for startling stunts, foul language and outrageous behavior, is expected to bring brutal honesty to "America's Got Talent" as a judge alongside Howie Mandel and Sharon Osbourne. Msnbc's Craig Melvin reports.
But once those auditions are over, Stern won't have to worry about hitting the road for the regular rounds. Production of the live show will travel to him in New York.

James Murdoch looks lonelier after week of probes (Reuters)
LONDON (Reuters) ? The methodical dissection in courtrooms across London this week of events at Rupert Murdoch's now-defunct News of the World tabloid has finally destroyed the company's long-held defense about phone-hacking and left son James more isolated than ever.
The 39-year-old, until recently seen as the Murdoch child most likely to replace Rupert at the top of News Corp (NSWA.O), has until now hung on to his job by blaming those around him for the hacking scandal that has caused public outrage.
Criticism of James Murdoch initially focused on his poor handling of the affair but accusations by two of his former top lieutenants that he misled parliament in July turned the spotlight on his own involvement in a possible cover-up.
"It really became personal with the challenge by Crone and Myler," said a person close to Murdoch, referring to the News of the World's ex-legal chief and last editor who appeared at an inquiry this week.
The public opposition between Colin Myler and James Murdoch -- Myler was previously at the New York Post and was close to James's rather Rupert -- can only have increased tensions within the global media group and the family.
The drama had appeared to subside from a peak in July, when News Corp took the shocking damage-limitation decision to shut down the News of the World, and both Murdochs were dragged into Britain's parliament to answer questions about phone-hacking.
But the longer-lasting damage to Murdoch's reputation appears to have developed in the following months.
A government-ordered inquiry sits most days at London's High Court, poring over every detail of the culture, practices and ethics of the News of the World and its rivals.
In separate courtrooms around the city, the private investigator central to the hacking is suing the newspaper after it stopped paying his legal fees, some senior executives have launched legal claims and others are suing for unfair dismissal.
The result has been a drip feed of information that has kept the story on front pages and the pressure on Murdoch.
"We are now past the tipping point," said crisis PR expert Richard Levick, who has advised organizations in trouble including the Catholic church and Arab governments. "We can see the future, and for James Murdoch it's not good."
NIGHTMARE SCENARIO
Ex-legal chief Tom Crone and former editor Myler resurfaced this week at a judge-led inquiry ordered by Britain's prime minister at the height of the scandal, and, more dangerously, also turned up in a 2008 email chain sent to by Myler to James Murdoch and now made public, which he claims he did not read.
The emails talk about a "nightmare scenario" in relation to an attempt to settle with a hacking victim who planned to demonstrate that the practice was rife at the newspaper, not limited to a "rogue reporter" as the company had claimed.
The correspondence, discovered by lawyers hired by News Corp for an internal investigation, provides the strongest evidence yet that Murdoch may have known there was evidence of more widespread hacking, and back up Crone and Myler's word against his.
Murdoch said in response to the unearthing of the email this week that he probably received it on his BlackBerry mobile phone and did not scroll down to read the chain below, despite the fact that the top of the email says "it is as bad as we feared".
His so-called "BlackBerry defense" has been widely derided by critics.
"If he's telling the truth that he didn't read it then he is negligent and if he did read it then he's lying," said Roy Greenslade, a London professor of journalism who has worked for Rupert Murdoch and was editor of the Daily Mirror.
"It is hugely significant and I think a watershed moment for him," said Greenslade. "I believe his position is untenable."
Inside the company, a few supporters still believe it could be possible for James Murdoch to succeed his father as chief executive one day, but it will not be soon, and for the time being he will keep a relatively low profile internally.
Murdoch's move to the United States to work as deputy chief operating officer to Chase Carey has been delayed by the investigations in Britain, but he is spending more and more time in New York and planning to move there from London next year.
"The process seems to have taken a toll on him emotionally, but he is holding up better than one would expect under the circumstances... he is still taking meetings and making business plans for the new year," said one News Corp insider.

House GOP unveils $1 trillion spending bill (AP)
WASHINGTON ? House Republicans have unveiled a massive $1 trillion-plus yearend spending package despite a plea from the White House for additional talks over a handful of provisions opposed by President Barack Obama.
The measure unveiled late Wednesday curbs agency budgets but drops many policy provisions sought by GOP conservatives.
But it contains language to roll back Obama administration policies that had loosened restrictions on the rights of Cuban immigrants to send money to relatives in Cuba or travel back to the island to visit them. Earlier this year, the White House promised a veto over the proposals, which are opposed by many in the GOP-leaning Cuban-American community, a powerful political force in the swing state of Florida.
The spending measure had been held up by Senate Democrats seeking leverage in talks on extending payroll tax cuts and unemployment insurance ? two pillars of Obama's jobs agenda.
But Democratic leverage to stall the massive spending measure seems limited, since it raises the threat of a government shutdown.
Release of the legislation ? to meet GOP transparency rules if a vote is to be held Friday ? came just a couple of hours after the White House issued a statement saying that Obama "continues to have significant concerns about a number of provisions" in the legislation.
White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer called for another stopgap funding bill to buy time for talks on both the spending bill and the payroll tax measure.
Stopgap funding runs out Friday at midnight.
The underlying bill has bipartisan backing but could encounter turbulence with tea party lawmakers seeking far more significant cuts to government agencies. The measure funds the day-to-day operating budgets of 10 Cabinet departments and programs ranging from border security to flood control to combating AIDS and famine in Africa.
Democrats have yet to officially sign onto the measure, though top lawmakers in the party ? including Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii ? are on board.
Given White House concerns, changes are still possible before a vote.
On spending, the measure implements this summer's hard-fought budget pact between President Barack Obama and Republican leaders. That deal essentially freezes agency budgets, on average, at levels that were approved back in April for the recently completed budget year.
The bill chips away at the Pentagon budget, foreign aid and environmental spending but boosts funding for veterans programs. The Securities and Exchange Commission, responsible for enforcing new regulations under last year's financial overhaul, won a 10 percent budget increase, even as the tax-collecting IRS absorbs a more than 3 percent cut to its budget.
Popular education initiatives for special-needs children and disadvantaged schools were basically frozen and Obama's cherished "Race to the Top" initiative, which provides grants to better-performing schools, would absorb a more than 20 percent cut.
Environmentalists scored clear wins in stopping virtually every significant GOP initiative to roll back Environmental Protection Agency rules. Most importantly, industry forces seeking to block new greenhouse gas and clean air rules, as well as a new clean water regulation opposed by mountaintop removal mining interests, were denied. But Republicans succeeded in blocking new energy efficiency standards for light bulbs and won delays to a new Labor Department rule requiring a reduction of coal dust responsible for black lung disease.
Drafted behind closed doors, the proposed bill would provide $115 billion for overseas security operations in Afghanistan and Iraq but give the Pentagon just a 1 percent boost in annual spending not directly related to the wars. The Environmental Protection Agency's budget would be cut by 3.5 percent. Foreign aid spending would drop and House lawmakers would absorb a 6 percent cut to their office budgets.
On spending, the measure generally consists of relatively small adjustments to thousands of individual programs. Agencies like the Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement will get a boost within the Homeland Security Department, while GOP defense hawks won additional funding to modernize the U.S. nuclear weapons arsenal. The troubled, over-budget, next-generation F-35 fighter plane program would be largely protected.
Social conservatives won a ban on government-funded abortions in Washington, D.C., and restored a longstanding ban on U.S. funding for needle exchange programs used to prevent the spread of HIV. But efforts to take away federal funding for Planned Parenthood failed, as expected.
