Dad Saves Kid From Falling Off Cliff, Gets Traffic Ticket Anyway

Frank Roder, a New Jersey dad, saved his son from falling off a cliff, but couldn't stop his Jeep from going over the precipice and into a river below.

The reward for his ordeal? Two traffic tickets from local police.

Roder, a construction worker from the town of Winfield Park, had taken his son, Aidan, down to the Rahway River to feed some ducks last week.

But when he stopped briefly before settling on a parking space, the impatient boy jumped out ran toward a ledge, 35 feet above the river.

Frank Roder Saves Son, Gets Ticket

"He hopped out, and I thought that was okay, I was just going to park," Roder, 38, said, but "he just took off, made a beeline for the edge."

The panic-stricken father jumped out of the cab of his Jeep Commander and raced after the errant boy, catching him just feet from the cliff.

That's when Aidan, eyes as big as saucers, said, "Um, Daddy ..."

Roder turned in time to see the Jeep nosedive down the embankment and land in the muddy water. Union County police converged on the scene.

He was counting his blessings when a cop approached him and handed him two tickets:

1. Failure to produce the insurance card (somewhere in the waterlogged cab).
2. Failure to use his emergency brake.

"I couldn't believe it," Roder said. "He said, 'If you would have taken the five seconds to apply the brake, this never would have happened!'

"I say, 'Really? And if I did and my boy stepped over the edge and fell instead, then were would I be?' He says, 'Jail, for child endangerment.'"

Union County Police Chief Daniel Vaniska told Fox News that his officers have some discretion about when and when not to write a ticket. But he said he just didn't have enough information to second-guess what this officer did.

"It probably could have gone either way," Vaniska said.

"I can't comment on the discretionary practices of an officer, but certainly, the fellow will have an opportunity to tell his story in court."

Yang Rui, host of CCTV-9's English-language talk show, Dialogue, is under fire for a microblog posting he made last week calling for the China to "Clean out foreign garbage."

BEIJING ? Following recent high-profile examples of foreigners behaving badly in China, last week saw a spike of anti-foreigner sentiment that culminated in the announcement of a hundred day Beijing police crackdown on illegal immigration.

Among the commentators who applauded the crackdown was Yang Rui, a television host on China?s state-run English-language TV network, CCTV-9. On his microblog on China?s Twitter-like service, Weibo, Yang posted a bile-laden diatribe on how China?s Public Security Bureau should deal with foreigners (Thanks to China Smack for the translation):

"The Ministry of Public Security must clean out foreign garbage, arrest foreign thugs and protect ignorant/innocent girls, with Wudaokou (popular student area in Beijing) and Sanlitun (bar & restaurant district in Beijing] being the disaster areas [worst places]. Behead the snake heads [human traffickers], the unemployed Americans and Europeans who come to China to make money, trafficking in people, misleading the public and encouraging them to emigrate. Identify the foreign spies, who find a Chinese woman to cohabitate with, while their job is to collect intelligence, drawing maps and perfecting GPS [coordinates] for Japan, Korea, Europe, and America under the guise of being tourists. Drive out the foreign shrew, shut down Al Jazeera?s Beijing office, let those who demonize China shut their mouths!"

The vitriol in Yang?s post is appalling but is made all the more worse by his day job. Yang co-hosts ?Dialogue,? a current event news talk program in the vein of ?Meet the Press? or the ?Charlie Rose Show.? On his program, Yang invites foreign experts to discuss topical world and China-related news.

That Yang holds such inflammatory opinions of foreigners is worrying, given that he?s the host of one of CCTV?s more venerable news programs charged with providing a forum for the civil exchange of ideas and opinions between China and the outside world.

Ad hominem attacks on foreigners aside, particularly of concern are Yang?s charges that foreign spies have infiltrated China, at a time when Chinese suspicions of foreigners are already running high.

Yang?s comments come after a series of high-profile incidents that have provoked extreme nationalist rhetoric in public debate: sovereignty in the South China Sea, American re-commitment to Asia and the recent kidnapping of Chinese fishing vessels by North Korea.

Guests who have appeared on Yang?s show have contributed to the negative fall-out.

The Atlantic?s James Fallows ?who during his years in China occasionally appeared on the program? posted a piece on his blog about what it was like to appear on ?Dialogue.?

Similarly, Charlie Custer, founder of the tech blog China Geeks and a two-time guest on the show also expressed his outrage and even confronted Yang on Weibo about his post.

Yang responded on Weibo by calling for the Public Security Bureau to investigate Custer and even threatened to sue him.

One thing that is clear from the reaction registered by Fallows, Custer, and other foreign guests is that it?s about to get a little bit harder for Yang to find foreigners willing to appear on his show.

Explanation or apology?

NBC News attempted to call Yang; an email sent to him today went unanswered. But the embattled host penned a statement in today?s edition of the Global Times, apparently as a response to a Wall Street Journal story about the incident.

In this statement, Yang claimed his comments were a reaction to last week?s news and a ?wake-up call? for both Westerners and Chinese people. While he acknowledged that there was a ?silent majority in the expat communities who obey and respect our culture and society,? by singling out the ?foreign trash,? Yang argues he was ?protecting the reputation of decent Westerners.?

However, he stood by his comments on Al Jazeera and the ?foreign shrew,? a reference to Al Jazeera correspondent, Melissa Chan, who earlier this month became the first foreign reporter to be expelled from China in more than a decade.

Yang remains unapologetic about his characterization of Chan, only making the point that translations of his post had mislabeled her ?b?ch? instead of ?shrew.?

China is currently investing millions of dollars into what have been branded as ?soft power? initiatives, designed to improve the mainland?s global standing. They include the development of enterprises such as CCTV America, China?s new 24-hour cable news channel seen in the United States, which is meant to provide a more polished and China-centric interpretation of world news. ??

The success of such programming will rely significantly on China?s willingness to provide a measured and open look at itself. But that willingness looks threatened by rhetoric such as Yang's.

5 Actions Adults Can Take NOW to Protect Kids From Bullying ...

This is the third in a three-part series of posts since watching the ?Bully? documentary. My ?Bully? movie review called for the need to turn ?watching the movie into positive action.? ?It?s clear that people need practical solutions and actions that they can take to help stop bullying. Here?s a place to start:

"Bullying: What Adults Need To Know And Do To Keep Kids Safe" by Irene van der Zande

As the movie ?Bully? shows, the misery caused by bullying is an emergency. ?Emergencies require urgent action. If every adult were to take the following five actions consistently, families, schools, youth organizations, and neighborhoods could become communities of caring, respect, and safety for all their members.

Start to take these five steps TODAY to protect the children and teens in your life from bullying.

1) Insist on powerful, respectful adult leadership. The people caring for kids are doing the most important job in the world.

Kids need YOU and all of the adults in their lives to take personal responsibility for managing their emotional and physical safety. Bullying is a safety issue. While children and teens can learn how to help, staying in charge of safety is an ADULT responsibility. Every adult in a child?s life is responsible for ensuring that each child is safe and acts safely towards others.

Children and teens learn more from what they see us doing more than anything we can tell them. Positive adult leadership means providing a good role model by staying assertive and respectful even under pressure or when others are being rude ? and insisting that all adults who are in charge of your kids do the same.

Adult leadership means not giving your power away. No matter what position of authority someone holds, speak up if this person?s behavior or failure to act makes you uncomfortable.? Insist on having the problem fixed. When it comes to your child?s safety, don?t take ?No? for an answer.

Insist that adults at a school or a youth group all take total responsibility of all the children all the time, even if they are not ?in charge? at that moment. ?As one mother wrote to Kidpower recently, ?I had some issues with the staff at my children?s school not taking responsibility when my son was being unsafe. He kept hiding on the playground even after I pointed this safety problem to them. As Kidpower has taught me, I kept seeking help in this situation until someone listened to me.?

2) Make SURE Kids know you CARE. ?Don?t assume that a child knows. No matter how busy you are, tell young people often,??Your safety and well being are the most important things in the world to me. If anything bothers you, I want to know, and I will do my best to help you.?

Listen in a calm, caring way when young people come to you with their problems: No matter what you think they should have done differently or how trivial it seems to you, no matter how busy you are, start by saying, ?Thank you for telling me.? ?Remember that a child who is complaining about someone needs help ? even if this help is in finding more positive ways of getting attention or being powerful.

Be compassionate rather than telling kids not to be upset or giving a lecture. Ignoring or suppressing upset feelings might cause a child to hide these feelings from you but does not make the hurt go away. Hidden hurt can build up like the pressure inside of a soda bottle and might explode into unsafe actions. Instead, kids can learn to manage upset feelings if they feel safe talking about them, get support in solving problems, and learn how to manage their emotions.

Take charge of your own feelings so that you act calmly instead of overreacting. It?s normal to feel worried and upset when you learn about a potential threat to your child?s well being, but if you get very upset, your child may try to take care of you or shut down.

Show kids you care by following through and doing something to solve the problem, even if it is difficult. If a child is being bullied, showing you care means:

• Providing ongoing support in a calm, reassuring way;
• Insisting on solutions including changing schools or classrooms if the situation doesn?t get better;
• Getting professional help if the child stays upset or shows signs of mental health problems;
• Finding new friends or social groups outside of school where the child is accepted; and
• Having the child learn skills through a class such as those offered by Kidpower.

Because kids often forget, keep reminding them. Ask once in a while, ?Is there anything you?ve been wondering or worrying about that you have not told me??

3) Keep your radar on. Stay aware of what kids are saying and doing. The best anti-bullying programs in the world won?t work if the adults in charge don?t know what their kids are doing and saying. Any of us can become so focused on a conversation or an activity that we don?t see what is happening around us.

The problem is that a lot of bullying happens under the noses of adults who are so involved in talking to each other or getting something finished that they lose track of what is happening with their kids. Not noticing a bullying problem happening in front of you sends a contradictory message to kids about whether or not adults mean what they say about this behavior being wrong.

No matter how busy or distracted you are, check out what is happening with the young people in your care. What?s going on with that cluster of kids in the corner or by the slide? How?s the girl with the quick temper doing? What about the boy who often seems lost and unhappy?

Develop the skill of Splitting Your Attention to avoid tunnel vision. When you have kids in your care, interrupt what you are doing to observe what the kids are doing as well as what else is happening around you.

You also want to Keep Your Radar On about what is happening in popular culture, media and the internet. For example, a joke about ?Kick a Ginger Day? on the satirical TV show South Park inspired a Facebook campaign that led to assaults on a number of redheaded kids, teens, and even adults.

Keeping Your Radar On will prepare you to step in to stop or redirect unsafe behavior.

4) Don?t let kids throw stones. Intervene immediately in a powerful, respectful way so that you stop a child being unkind to another with the same determination that you would stop that child from throwing a rock through a window.

If we saw kids throwing rocks at each other or at windows, we would immediately react, because we can see the damage it causes. Even if a rock doesn?t land, we understand that getting hit by a rock can be dangerous and might break something important. Emotional rocks like teasing can shatter the windows of a vulnerable child?s soul.

Tell kids when their words or actions can be hurtful. Coach them to practice saying something respectful and doing something safer instead. Stop jokes like, ?You?re so gay? That?s retarded? You?re fat.? Even if everyone in the room says it?s okay, explain that putdowns like these are hurtful. Disrespectful language, even if there is no bad intention, has no place in a healthy, caring environment.

Teach kids that ?making fun? of anyone in hurtful ways is cruel. Remember that disrespectful or threatening gestures, sounds, and facial expressions are also ways to throw emotional stones.

5) Teach kids skills for taking charge of their safety. People are more prepared to do in real life what they have practiced. Whether you use Kidpower or some other program, make sure that kids have the chance to practice how to:

• Stay in charge of what they say and do even if they are annoyed or upset;

• Recognize unsafe behavior;
• Leave a potentially dangerous situation;
• Protect themselves from hurtful words and behavior;
• Resist emotional coercion;
• Set boundaries even if there is a lot of social pressure not to;
• Be persistent in getting the attention of busy, distracted adults in order to get help; and

Panel advises against prostate cancer test

MONDAY, May 21 (HealthDay News) -- In a highly anticipated move sure to unleash heated debate, a prominent U.S. government advisory panel is recommending that men of all ages no longer be screened for prostate cancer by undergoing the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, an independent group of medical experts in prevention and evidence-based medicine, said PSA screening results in overdiagnosis of prostate cancer and unnecessary treatment that can leave men impotent and incontinent.

This final recommendation comes seven months after the task force drafted a report giving a "D" rating for the PSA blood test. Previous guidelines had stated that most men should undergo screening beginning at age 50.

"Some may say that by rating the test a 'D' we're taking away the possibility of an informed decision, but we don't want that to be the case," said task force co-vice chair Dr. Michael LeFevre, a professor in the department of family and community medicine at the University of Missouri School of Medicine. "This decision does not preclude a man choosing to be screened."

The task force is the same panel that in 2009 rejected regular mammograms for women in their 40s, after also concluding the benefits don't outweigh the harms.

The new recommendation is published online May 22 in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine.

About 242,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in Americans this year, and about 28,000 will die from it, according to the U.S. National Cancer Institute. More than two-thirds of those deaths occur after age 75, the task force said.

PSA tests -- which measure prostate-specific antigen, a protein produced by the prostate gland -- can detect which men are developing the malignancy. But they cannot discern between cases that will never become life-threatening and those that require treatment, such as surgery, radiation or hormone therapy.

Basing its recommendation mainly on two major trials of PSA testing in asymptomatic men in the United States and Europe, the task force concluded screening may only help one man in every 1,000 to avoid dying from prostate cancer. Up to five in 1,000 men will die within a month of prostate cancer surgery, the panel said, and between 10 and 70 per 1,000 men will suffer lifelong adverse effects, such as urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction and bowel dysfunction.

Many will also suffer unduly from persistent anxiety, the report said.

Critics of the task force's decision said the group underestimated the PSA test's benefits and overestimated its harms and also overlooked significant methodological flaws in the studies on which it based the "D" recommendation. None of the task force members are urologists or oncologists, making them unqualified to broach the topic, some health experts said.

"I think they're throwing away the baby with the bathwater," said Dr. William Catalona, a professor of urology and director of the clinical prostate cancer program at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, who wrote an accompanying journal editorial condemning the move.

"There's just no other way to detect prostate cancer early than through PSA testing," Catalona added. "If we were to completely stop PSA testing in all men . . . it would result in countless men dying of metastatic prostate cancer. People are happy to be cured of their prostate cancer, even if they have some side effects."

Dr. Otis Brawley, chief medical officer at the American Cancer Society and an outspoken figure on the pros and cons of cancer screening tests, encouraged men to make their own choice about PSA screening while keeping the risks and benefits in mind. Certain men, including blacks and those with a family history of the disease, are at significantly higher risk of developing prostate cancer, he noted.

"I am hoping this (recommendation) shuts down mass screenings, where men are only told that this will help them, which is stretching the truth," Brawley said. "They're rarely told about the potential for harm and that, for the people running the screening, the [venture] is usually quite lucrative for them."

LeFevre said it remains to be seen whether health insurers will change their coverage of PSA screening based on the task force's recommendation. For one thing, insurers aren't supposed to tailor coverage decisions to USPSTF guidelines, he said.

"If you look at the overall costs of screening, the PSA test itself is very small," LeFevre said. "I'd be surprised to see them take what I call the political risk of backing away from that."
