2012's 12 Highly Anticipated Movies

If you thought 2011 was only so-so year for movies, brace yourself then for 2012! Lots of big names and movies coming out! We even heard Woody Allen will have a new movie. And lest we forget, 2012 is the apocalypse. . .for comic book flicks. It's the ultimate showdown as two fantastically-revered auteurs release summer comic blockbusters, starting with Joss Whedon's The Avengers and then Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises. Read on for 12 movies you, me, and maybe somebody you know are anticipating for next year!

??

When: January 20

Who: Mans Marlind, Bjorn Stein (director), Kate Beckinsale, Charles Dance, Stephen Rea

What: Selene returns to take down some more werewolves.

Why: Beckinsale makes a welcome, eye-catching return. And the Underworld series is the ultimate in January fare: fast, fun, and warmly trashy.

??

When: March 23

Who: Gary Ross (director), Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson

What: A dark fantasy film that explores daily life in America if American Idol were replaced with a psychotic and brutal televised ritual where young people are pitted against each other and looked upon by a panel of crazies.

Why: With Harry Potter over and Twilight winding down, Hollywood needs a new series to wean young audiences on. Enter: The Hunger Games.

??

When: May 4

Who: Joss Whedon (director), Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson

What: A band of disparate superheroes (selected on skill, wealth, brains, whether they're into leather or not) work together for the greater good.

Why: We've put up with weird cameos and loose story threads across nearly a dozen Marvel films. It all pays off here.

??

When: May 25

Who: Barry Levinson (director), Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin

What: A secret government agent travels back in time in search of his old partner and some good jokes, having exhausted all of them in the present day.

Why: Will Smith hasn't released a movie since 2008 (guess Seven Pounds not breaking $100 million convinced him to focus on other things) and there appears to be still worldwide affection for the franchise.

??

When: June 1

Who: Rupert Sanders (director), Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth

What: A girl and a witch settle an argument over which is fairer with swords, armies, and sensible bloodletting.

Why: We've witnessed enough putting and lip biting from Stewart: Bring us on some violence!

??

When: June 8

Who: Ridley Scott (director), Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace, Idris elba

What: Humans explore deep space in search of our origins, and to test theory that in space no one can hear you scream.

Why: Scott makes a welcome return to sci-fi territory and considering the killer 2011 Fassbender has had, we're eager to see him carry that over to 2012 and straight into the apocalypse.

??

When: June 22

Who: Mark Andrews (director), Kelly Macdonald, Craig Ferguson, Emma Thompson

What: A groundbreaking (main character is a girl, has red hair) fairy tale about an impetuous princess, whose skill at archery inadvertently unleashes chaos in her kingdom.

Why: Pixar always has something to prove with each movie and with Cars 2 breaking Pixar's 16-year Certified Fresh streak, a lot rides on Brave.

??

When: July 3

Who: Gary Ross Marc Webb (director), Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans

What: A high school photojournalist is bitten by a radioactive spider and learns that with great power comes hot girls like Gwen Stacy.

Why: Rebooting a series only 10 years old? Bold move, Sony. The studio must utterly wow the world with Amazing Spider-Man, and the audience response to the trailer and hot young cast and director has this spider on the upswing.

??

When: July 20

Who: Christopher Nolan (director), Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman

What: The caped crusader returns after eight years when Gotham City is terrorized by a villain frustrated that nobody understands him.

Why: This is it. The end of the legend. How far will Nolan be willing to go in closing out the ultimate comic trilogy?

??

When: August 17

Who: Sylvester Stallone (director), Slyvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li

What: Armed manly men take a trip somewhere manly.

Why: If you're one of the people who made the original a $200 million smash, you already know why!

??

When: November 12

Who: Bill Condon (director), Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, Robert Pattinson

What: A vampire, a human, a werewolf, and an infant demon overcome their differences.

Why: Finally, it's OVER! . . .That is, we mean, this scintillating, well-balanced, and non-spooky journey of vampires and werewolves and the babies they love reaches the bloody romantic climax.

??

When: December 14

Who: Peter Jackson (director), Martin Freeman, Ian Holm, Ian McKellan

What: A band of vertically-challenged friends, with the help of a wizard, quest for some jewelry.

Why: The actors, the sets, the personnel -- everything is in place. And high hopes remain that Jackson's heart is in the right place, too, and that his passion for Middle-earth hasn't diminished after so many years spent on the films.

What are YOU looking forward to in 2012?

Monique Ruffin: It's Official: Gay Is the New Black

The civil rights issue of our time is gay marriage, and the key players in our country's most significant civil rights movement are on the wrong side of it. The black church has taken on a new role: oppressor.

As a black person born in the late '60s, I missed the actual Civil Rights Movement, but the remnants of oppression and stories of segregation were always fresh on my grandmother's mind. It was her lessons in black history, literature, and Christianity that inspired me to be proud of my heritage. She did her best to teach me the value of diversity, and so I learned to love all people regardless of their race, sexual orientation, religion, or socioeconomic background.

Although my grandmother taught me to love, she was not immune to her community's mores. And so she also -- unconsciously -- taught me to deny the humanity of another human. My uncle (one of her five sons) is gay. For his entire childhood and young adult life he was teased and beaten by his brothers for being gay. Our family never spoke aloud about my uncle's homosexuality, and for decades we called his life partner, who was a kind and loving man, his "friend." It was against the rules to openly accept, acknowledge, or appreciate my uncle for all that he really was. This was being a good Christian in my family's eyes, but for me it was telling a lie and an act of oppression.

Today, I am still shocked by the response of some of my black Christian friends to the plight of gay people in our nation. "I just don't agree that gay people can compare their struggles to ours," they bemoan. This is followed by the list of injustices blacks have experienced: the middle passage, slavery, lynching, rapes, and deaths. "Gay people haven't suffered nearly as much as blacks," they say. "Being black is not a choice," they add. "As if being gay is," I respond. I don't support the comparison. For me, the sufferings of a person or a group of people at the hands of other humans are frightening and heartbreaking. Instinctually, I feel that if any group can be oppressed, then I can be oppressed. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. made this very point when he said, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." This is why I'm always flabbergasted when I see some black Christians fighting against the civil rights of gays. We know firsthand the impact and dehumanization of discrimination.

Like many black people, I was raised in the church. I was in church every Wednesday evening and all day Sunday. There was Bible study, Sunday school, and services. I have some great memories of growing up in church. However, when I became a young adult, I began to recognize a conflict in the church's "truth" and reality. Preachers and church members spoke of the sinful nature of homosexuality, but sometimes, the very people leading prayers, preaching, and participating in the choir were obviously gay. Living in Los Angeles, I've sat in some of the biggest megachurches and have been baffled to learn that some of these church leaders -- who preach that homosexuality is a sin -- are closeted gay people. After watching a close friend's life come undone because of a scandal around her closeted gay husband, I left Christianity for good. Such hypocrisy in a place promoting spiritual growth was more than I could handle.

Not all Christians oppose gay marriage because they are struggling with their own sexual orientation. There are also those black Christians who oppose gay marriage because the Bible declares, in their interpretation of it, that homosexuality is a sin. This is their sincere belief and value system. However, the Bible was also key in the justification of enslaving blacks centuries ago. Blacks were believed to be descendants of Canaan's son Ham and, accordingly, were cursed to serve as slaves. We perceive this as outrageous. Is it not equally outrageous to think that God deems another group of people to be less than? Rather than opposing the right of people who love one another to be married, I will suggest that there are those black people who might look into their closets and begin cleaning them out. Our churches might begin making their priority the rising numbers of gay black men who are contracting HIV each year. They might teach church members self-awareness and inner growth as a means of revealing the spirit of Christ within them. When I was a practicing Christian, learning how to embody the loving spirit of Jesus -- who dared not judge but lived a life of love and compassion -- would have served me well. I believed then, and still hold dear, Jesus the Christ's command to love. Above all things, love.

Love is the driving component. Those who have suffered grave atrocities at the hands of others know too closely what the absence of love creates. They know the isolation, fear, devastation, and self-hatred the lack of love breeds. We don't need gay people to be lynched in order to know that the denial of their rights is damaging to the progress of all peoples. If one person has suffered at the hand of another, we need not measure that suffering to prove its value. In our attempt to distance ourselves from the plight of gay people, we also distance ourselves from our own struggle and take the position of oppressor.

Gay is the new black. And some Christian blacks must be willing to look into their hearts and find the seeds of fear that would have them deny the humanity of another in the name of God (just the way it was done to them not that long ago). Let's ask ourselves: do we fear gays or fear being gay? Why must gay leaders in our churches and communities serve clandestinely? Consider what the power of love and acceptance might offer if we are willing to stand courageously with gays as we stood for ourselves decades ago. Our freedom will not truly be granted until we can pass it forward. Gay is the new black, sadly, because many blacks haven't been willing to embrace their own practices, secrets, fear, and shame about homosexuality. Many blacks have not been able to reconcile their real-life experience with their faith, and until they do this, they are oppressed people who are also practicing the oppression of others.

Any GSM phone vulnerable to new scam: researcher (Reuters)

BERLIN (Reuters) ? A well-known expert on mobile phone security says a vulnerability in a widely used wireless technology could allow hackers to gain remote control of phones, instructing them to send text messages or make calls.

They could use the vulnerability in the GSM network technology, which is used by billions of people in about 80 percent of the global mobile market, to make calls or send texts to expensive, premium phone and messaging services in scams, said Karsten Nohl, head of Germany's Security Research Labs.

Similar attacks against a small number of smartphones have been done before, but the new attack could expose any cellphone using GSM technology.

"We can do it to hundreds of thousands of phones in a short timeframe," Nohl told Reuters in advance of a presentation at a hacking convention in Berlin on Tuesday.

Attacks on corporate landline phone systems are fairly common, often involving bogus premium-service phone lines that hackers set up across Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia.

Fraudsters make calls to the numbers from hacked business phone systems or mobile phones, then collect their cash and move on before the activity is identified.

The phone users typically don't identify the problem until after they receive their bills and telecommunications carriers often end up footing at least some of the costs.

Even though Nohl will not present details of attack at the conference, he said hackers will usually replicate the code needed for attacks within a few weeks.

    T-MOBILE, SFR LEAD RANKING

Mobile networks of Germany's T-Mobile and France's SFR offer their clients best protection against online criminals wanting to intercept their calls or track their movements, shows a new ranking Nohl will demonstrate at his presentation.

The new ranking, at gsmmap.org, lets consumers to see how their operators are performing and lets anyone to participate in measurement of their carriers' security.

Researchers reviewed 32 operators in 11 countries and rated their performance based on how easy it was for them to intercept the calls, impersonate someone's device or track the device.

"None of the networks protects users very well," Nohl said.

The sample is set to grow from 32 carriers dramatically next year as the tool enables anyone to participate in gathering of the data.

Nohl said mobile telecom operators could easily improve their clients' security, in many cases by just updating their software.

"Mobile network is by far the weakest part of the mobile ecosystem, even when compared to a lot attacked Android or iOS devices," he said.

Researchers reviewed operators in Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Morocco, Slovakia, Switzerland and Thailand.

    Full-time: London Irish 29 Exeter Chiefs 22

Toby Booth insisted his London Irish side were good value for a win that lifts them to third place in the Aviva Premiership.

Tries from centres Joe Ansbro and Shontayne Hape, along with 19 points kicked by Tom Homer secured victory despite a late fightback by Exeter.

And Booth said: ?On chances created, rather than possession, we were good for the win.

?Exeter work very hard, but we had a bit more quality.

?And they were happy to kick the ball out (to end the game) and take a losing bonus point. That says something about how they view us,? added Exiles' coach.

Ansbro gave Irish a flying start with a try after just three minutes when he pounced on a pass by Declan Danaher following a great break by Topsy Ojo.

And with Homer once again in great form with the boot, Exiles surged into a 19-9 half-time lead.

But Exeter fly-half Ignacio Mieres pegged away at the deficit, sending over five penalties and converting a second-half try by Luke Arscott.

Booth said: ?We started exceptionally well and took the game by the scruff of the neck, but we couldn?t dictate it because the penalty count was two-to-one in their favour. We have to react to the referee a lot quicker than we did.

?The best way to stop a team that drives as much as Exeter do is to not give them lineouts in your final quarter.

?We made life more difficult than we needed to, but we are delighted with the outcome.

?There was a lot of endeavour from both sides and it was an enthralling contest in front of a good crowd.?

Booth added: ?Tom Homer put in a good performance and I thought Delon Armitage was great.

?We knew Exeter were going to kick the ball a lot from their own third and we created a lot of problems for them when we counter-attacked.?

Hape scored his try with a bull-dozing break from a pass by Delon Armitage.

And Booth continued: ?Shontayne Hape gave us lots of go-forward, we were very clinical at the few lineouts we had, while the playable ball off scrums was probably 50-50.

?We just need to wise up a bit at the breakdown.?

?We showed a lot of character to bounce back from our defeat at home to Racing Metro.?

London Irish will be looking to consolidate their position in the play-off zone when they visit Bath on New Year?s Day.

Booth said: ?The schedule makes it very difficult for us because we have played post -Christmas and they have had longer to prepare than us.

?They have lost a few on the bounce, but we have our own axe to grind after losing to them here last New Year?s Day. We need to get ourselves in the best physical state and go down there and give it a good crack.?

None of the injured London Irish players are likely to recover in time to face Bath.

But Booth revealed: ?We have had issues with illness to Max Lahiff, Kieran Lowe and Faan Rautenbach, which has hit us quite hard. We are hoping they will be back.?

To see how it all unfolded just click below.

London Irish: 15 Delon Armitage, 14 Topsy Ojo, 13 Joe Ansbro, 12 Shontayne Hape, 11 Tom Homer, 10 Steven Shingler, 9 Darren Allinson; 1 Clarke Dermody (c), 2 David Paice, 3 Paulica Ion, 4 Bryn Evans, 5 Matt Garvey, 6 Declan Danaher, 7 Jamie Gibson, 8 Richard Thorpe.

Replacements: 16 James Buckland, 17 Alex Corbisiero, 18 Leo Halavatau, 19 Bob Casey, 20 Alex Gray, 21 Adam Thompstone, 22 Adrian Jarvis, 23 Paul Hodgson.

Exeter Chiefs: 15 Luke Arscott, 14 Gonzalo Camacho, 13 Nic Sestaret, 12 Phil Dollman, 11 Matt Jess, 10 Ignacio Mieres, 9 Haydn Thomas; 1 Hoani Tui, 2 Simon Alcott, 3 Craig Mitchell, 4 Tom Hayes (c), 5 Chris Bentley, 6 Richard Baxter, 7 James Scaysbrook, 8 James Phillips.

Replacements: 16 Neil Clark, 17 Brett Sturgess, 18 John Andress, 19 Aly Muldowney, 20 Tom Johnson, 21 Kevin Barrett, 22 Gareth Steenson, 23 Jason Shoemark.

Sena WalletSlim for iPhone 4S Video Review

Posted on 26 December 2011 by Dan Cohen

    Photo 22

The other day we reviewed Sena?s gorgeous Hampton Wallet for the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. The case completely protects the iPhone and doubles as a highly functional wallet with three card slots and an additional space behind them for stowing receipts or a few dollars. In day-to-day use, however, the case can be a tiny bit cumbersome since it requires you to unsnap the cover to access the screen. It also can be challenging to use the iPhone with one hand. That doesn?t mean it isn?t an awesome case. It IS but it might not be the right case for you. If you can deal with something a bit simpler and don?t want the screen covered, Sena?s?WalletSlim for iPhone 4S?might be the ticket. This open-faced case gives you two card slots and doesn?t interfere with trying to use the iPhone with a single hand. Here?s a brief video look?

    Photo 28

    From Sena:

The WalletSlim combines your iPhone 4S with a slim premium leather wallet. This form-fitting case is composed of ultra-thin premium leather providing a soft layer of skin to gently protect your iPhone 4S. It is similar to our LeatherSkin case with an additional wallet feature. Offered in various solid colors in classic leather and in croco leather, the WalletSlim is perfect for a slim curve-hugging leather design while adding the convenience of a wallet. The secure snap closure provides a snug fit to your iPhone 4S. Its rigid protective layer reinforces additional backbone support for durability. It is individually handcrafted from the finest Italian Napa leather with Sena?s well-known quality and strong attention to detail. The WalletSlim is a perfect solution for the individual who likes the form-fitting design of the LeatherSkin while combining the benefit of a premium leather wallet.

    Features:

Hand-crafted from the finest quality full grain, Italian leather

    Slim curve-hugging leather design

Doubles as a 2 pocket wallet

Soft velvet lining with light protective layer

    Cutouts for play-thru functionality

    Proximity sensor opening

    Charge/sync port opening

    Camera lens/flash opening

    Secure snap closure

    Easy device access

Use iPhone 4S while in case

    Sena craftsmanship and quality

    Video Review:

    YouTube Preview Image

Because there is nothing covering the screen of the iPhone, the WalletSlim solves one of the main issues I am finding with the Hampton Wallet. At the same time, however, it doesn?t protect the screen. If you need complete protection and want a wallet-case the Hampton Wallet may still be the way to go for you. If, on the other hand, you want something that is just about as simple as you are going to find AND you want to carry two or three cards with you this case is worth serious consideration. Because it comes from Sena you know it is going to last a long time. And because it is leather you know it will wear in and get softer the more you use it. You can find details and order the case here on the Sena website.

    Safari

    MSRP: $44.95

What I Like: Protects the iPhone?s sides and back while leaving the screen fully accessible; Two slots would work well for carrying a license and one or two credit cards; Sena quality

What Needs Improvement: Limited in storage capacity; Leather around the iPhone?s screen will take time to wear in

    Man United rolls

    By ROB HARRIS

    AP Sports Writer

    Associated Press Sports

    updated 3:15 p.m. ET Dec. 26, 2011

LONDON (AP) -Manchester United flourished as Manchester City floundered on Monday to wipe out its neighbor's lead in the Premier League title race.

City's was left clinging to top spot on goal difference after its expensively assembled attacking unit failed to score in the league for the first time this season in a 0-0 draw at West Bromwich Albion.

Injury-hit United took full advantage, with Dimitar Berbatov's hat trick powering the champions to a second 5-0 rout in a week against Wigan.

"We're really hitting good form now and there's a real goal threat about us from all departments," United manager Alex Ferguson said. "If we're top of the league or joint top with City by New Year's Day I'll be happy."

Combined with Wednesday's 5-0 thrashing of Fulham, United seems to have shaken off its early Champions League exit earlier this month.

"It was a wake-up call because maybe everyone looked at themselves in the mirror and said, 'We can do much better,"' United defender Patrice Evra said. "What the fans expect of every player, we are doing now."

City and United are 10 points ahead of third-place Tottenham, which plays the first of two games in hand at Norwich on Tuesday.

Chelsea is a point further back in fourth and has all but given on up on its title hopes after Fulham condemned its west London rival to a third consecutive 1-1 draw.

Liverpool, three points behind Chelsea in sixth, failed to seize on Chelsea's slip-up, drawing 1-1 at home to bottom-place Blackburn.

Almost halfway through the season, the title race looks more and more like a two-horse race, although City is starting to show signs of weaknesses after setting a record for the best start ever to a Premier League campaign.

Mario Balotelli struck the top of the crossbar from 30 yards (meters) at the start of the second half having already had a goal disallowed when he volleyed home only to see an offside flag raised.

Lacking their usual bite, the leaders were frustrated by the hosts, who also hit the goal frame through Jerome Thomas.

"We know it is maybe impossible to stay at the top for 38 games but we will try," City manager Roberto Mancini said. "Maybe if we scored in the first half we would have scored two or three goals."

United achieved even more than that, as Park Ji-sung took just eight minutes to put his team in front, picking a spot in the top right of the net after being picked out by Evra's cutback.

United took full advantage of Wigan's Conor Sammon being sent off for fouling Michael Carrick, with Berbatov - on his second start of the season - holding off Antolin Alcaraz before netting his first of the day.

United had another injury setback at halftime when it lost Jonny Evans, its only fit center back, with a calf injury that is expected to rule him out for two weeks.

Thankfully for United all the pressure was on the Wigan goal. Berbatov latched onto Antonio Valencia's pass before firing a shot beyond Ali Al Habsi.

Valencia got on the scoresheet himself with a low strike before Berbatov completed his hat trick to make up ground on City in the goal difference stakes.

After Park was fouled by Alcaraz, substitute Wayne Rooney allowed Berbatov to net a third from the penalty spot.

"If we win and score goals and keep many clean sheets, like we did tonight, we're going to be at the top of the league at the end of the season," Evra said.

While United's focus is on a 20th league title, Chelsea's is just staying in the four Champions League places.

Juan Mata had put Chelsea in front at the start of the second half, but Clint Dempsey equalized with only Fulham's fifth away goal this season.

At the bottom of the table, Blackburn nudged closer to its relegation rivals by earning a point at Liverpool.

Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam put the ball into his own net on the stroke of halftime after a corner from Morten Gamst Pedersen to give Blackburn a surprising lead.

Maxi Rodriguez spared Liverpool from embarrassment after the break with his 11th goal in his last 12 starts. But even the return of captain Steven Gerrard after a two-month absence with an ankle injury as a second-half substitute couldn't inspire Liverpool to salvage a victory.

Blackburn is just a point behind Bolton, which lost 2-0 to a Newcastle side that had not won in six matches.

Sunderland climbed four points clear of the danger zone with a 1-1 draw at Everton.

Man caught with 247 animals in luggage

    By msnbc.com news services

A 51-year-old man faces up to 10 years in prison after he was caught in Argentina earlier this month with 247 snakes and other live animals in his suitcase, according to the Agence France-Presse.

Karel Abelovsky, a Czech national, was trying to board a Madrid-bound flight at Ezeiza Airport in Buenos Aires on December 7 when airport personnel discovered "organic substances moving inside," according to the AFP report.

Abelovsky's suitcase reportedly contained nine species of poisonous snakes.

Two animals in the bag were found dead. Had Abelovsky successfully boarded his flight, many more animals would likely have died due to lack of oxygen in the jet's cargo hold, AFP reported.

Abelovsky was charged with attempted smuggling. An exotic species smuggling ring is reportedly thought to be behind the uncovered attempt.

Facebook On Android Gets 58.3 Million Daily Active Users

Sites include Android.com , Facebook.com . Published on December 25th, 2011. Written by Anthony West.

The battle between Apple?s mobile platform and Android is intense and it is happening on all fronts, especially on the social networks. Apple seems to have switched focus away from Facebook and is now looking to build on its partnership with Twitter. Android on the other hand, has cemented its commitment to Facebook.

These establishment of a central focus of course, has resulted in a shift in popularity on the Facebook platform. According to a recent report, Facebook?s native app for Android now has a whopping 58.3 million daily active users (DAU), while Facebook for iPhone is now falling behind with 57.4 million DAUs. Things weren?t always like this though, and for a long time, Apple?s Facebook App was leading so badly, many thought Android would never catch up. This lag that Android suffered was due largely in part to the fact that Facebook released the Android App more than 12 months after it created and launched the iPhone App.

Will things change round again or will Facebook for Android rule supreme indefinitely? The answer is hard to ascertain at this point for many reasons, the chief one being that Facebook has launched another official iPhone App. This App currently stands at 5.5 million DAUs and many are speculating that it will soon mount a challenge to Android. But on the flip side of the coin, Facebook for Android is adding users 550,000 activations per day.

This sort of dynamic in the competitive process means that anything can happen?we?ll just have await the outcome.

Seven states win federal education competition (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Seven states won a share of $200 million in federal "Race to the Top" money to improve K-12 education programs, the Education Department announced Thursday.

The winners are Arizona, $25.1 million; Colorado, $17.9 million; Illinois, $42.8 million; Kentucky, $17 million; Louisiana, $17.5 million; Pennsylvania, $41.3 million; and New Jersey, $37.9 million.

The Obama administration has awarded billions of dollars in such competitions to encourage changes in education that it favors. The seven states competing in this round were all runners-up last year, and the Education Department has said it wants to encourage them to finish and carry out many of the changes proposed in their earlier applications.

Competing states committed to make changes such as improving principal and teacher evaluation systems and turning around under-performing schools. They also were asked to show specifically how they would improve science, technology, engineering and math instruction.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan said the money was driving dramatic improvements.

"We've had broken teacher-evaluation systems in many places, unfortunately for five, or six or seven decades," Duncan said. "You've seen more effort there and more movement in a short amount of time than in a long time prior to that, and many states are using Race to the Top resources to do that."

Two other states, South Carolina and California, were also eligible. South Carolina opted not to compete, while California submitted an incomplete application, the Education Department said.

Last week, nine states were announced as winners of a share of $500 million in grants under a similar competition focused on improving early learning programs.

Duncan also said federal officials are monitoring states to ensure that they follow through on their plans to improve schools with Race to the Top money. For example, he said he has warned Hawaii that it's in danger of losing funding.

"We're going to look for some pretty significant improvements early in the new year," Duncan said. "There's not a hard-and-fast date. If we see things turning around, that would be fantastic. If we don't see things turning around, then we've got some tough decisions to make."

Hearing to end today on possible court-martial for Bradley Manning

Pfc. Bradley Manning is accused of leaking hundreds of thousands of US military and diplomatic documents to Wikileaks website. His defense attorneys argue that weak oversight is to blame.

Pre-trial hearings to decide whether to court-martial Pfc. Bradley Manning ? the soldier accused of stealing and leaking hundreds of thousands of top-secret documents to the Wikileaks website ? are expected to end today.?But Private Manning?s adventures in the US military justice system appear to be just beginning.

Manning?s defense attorneys called just two witnesses to the stand to testify about Manning?s emotional outbursts while working in an intelligence analysis unit in Iraq in 2009 and 2010. Highlighting the outbursts could indicate that the defense team hopes to explore the extenuating circumstances behind Mannings actions of leaking 400,000 field reports from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as some 250,000 US State Department cables.

Given the importance of this case ? Manning?s alleged actions have been described as the single largest intelligence breach in US history ? it is unlikely that Manning can avoid a court martial. The question is whether Manning?s defense strategy could reveal more about the inner workings of the US military?s intelligence operations, the missteps of Manning?s superior officers, and even the alleged human rights violations that may have prompted Manning to leak the information in the first place.

Like the 1971 Pentagon Papers case before it, the so-called Wikileaks case is seen by US government officials as devastating to US national security interests, in which the lives of US officials and its informants abroad have been put into danger. Critics of the US see the Wikileaks case, conversely, as a chance to see the truth about alleged US misdeeds during the past decade since Sept. 11, 2001, a time during which the Bush and Obama administrations set aside longtime US laws against torture and indefinite detention.

Turkish road accident kills 25 (AP)

ANKARA, Turkey ? A passenger bus collided with a truck on a single lane road in southeast Turkey on Wednesday, killing 25 people, an official said.

Gov. Mustafa Toprak of Diyarbakir province said 16 other passengers were injured in the accident on a road linking Diyarbakir with the neighboring Batman province. He said some of the injured were in serious condition.

The mid-sized coach collided head-on with the truck, which was carrying bricks, said Ferit Basar, the mayor of the small town of Yukari Salat near the site of the crash.

The road was reduced to a single lane due to roadwork at the time of the crash, which probably helped cause the accident, Basar said.

Dogan news agency video footage showed medics stepping over a partly-covered body to rush an injured person on a stretcher to an ambulance. Body bags were placed side by side on the road, which was scattered with bricks.

The bus' front-end appeared cut open from the impact of the crash.

DHS renews support for the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - With $3.6 million in new federal funding, researchers at the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism http://www.start.umd.edu/>(START), based at the University of Maryland, will continue to expand the scientific understanding of the human causes and consequences of terrorism, specifically addressing crucial homeland security issues, such as terrorist behavior, violent extremism and counterterrorism.

Funding for the new round of research comes from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate http://www.dhs.gov/xabout/structure/editorial_0530.shtm>, which has renewed START's status as a DHS Center of Excellence, and continued funding support for the next five years. The first installment of the award provides $3.6 million for the center's next 18 months.

Based at the University of Maryland, START researchers from more than 40 institutions worldwide will use the new grant to: explore the social, behavioral and cultural factors that influence violent extremism, including political, financial and religious causes; examine the emergence and operations of domestic terrorists and how they interact with law enforcement strategies, community initiatives and government policies; collect and code terrorist data so that it can be incorporated into behavioral models that can be used in homeland security decision making.

"START is delighted to have this opportunity to continue supplying timely, objective information on the human characteristics of terrorism and its impact on communities to decision makers and policy experts," says Gary LaFree, director of START and professor of criminology at the University of Maryland.

    PLANNED RESEARCH INCLUDES:

VIOLENT EXTREMISM -- SOCIAL, BEHAVIORAL, AND CULTURAL FACTORS

  • Analyzing terrorist attacks, groups and ideologies to identify the characteristics, structural compositions and individual roles in launching attacks;
  • Examining the effectiveness of efforts to delegitimize the justifications an individual has for engaging in terrorist activities;
  • Assessing the impact of Internet communications on a terrorist group's ability to convey ideology and recruit; and
  • Gauging how society, family and friends affect and respond to the process of becoming a violent extremist.

DOMESTIC TERRORISTS -- EMERGENCE, OPERATIONS AND INTERACTIONS

  • Identifying conditions and attacks associated with homegrown terrorism and determining the process by which right-wing extremists turn to violence;
  • Surveying minority group attitudes towards U.S. policies and terrorist activities;
  • Compiling a database of federal counterterrorism initiatives; and
  • Comparing failed, foiled and successfully executed terrorist attacks to demonstrate components of counterterrorism efforts that have been successful and to identify opportunities for prevention.

COLLECTING, CODING AND USING DATA TO INFORM DECISIONS

  • Improving statistical modeling to better predict violence;
  • Updating and using the Global Terrorism Database - the world's largest, most comprehensive, open-source database including information on more than 98,000 terrorist attacks around the world from 1970 through 2010;
  • Creating the Terrorist and Extremist Organizations Database; and
  • Predicting which individuals will become leaders within violent and nonviolent organizations.

START began in 2005 as one of the Department of Homeland Security's Centers of Excellence, the first to focus on behavioral and social science. The current funding renewal follows a rigorous, competitive application process.

"Under the leadership of Dr. Gary LaFree, START has been a proactive and productive Center of Excellence that has served DHS well. We look forward to working with START for another five years," says Matthew Clark, director of DHS's Science and Technology Directorate's Office of University Programs.

With this grant, the University of Maryland continues to leverage its founding tradition as a land-grant institution, with a mission to shape research and education through the lens of public service. The new research program will provide the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) with an integrated system, whereby research findings are directly incorporated into policy recommendations and, in turn, public and policy needs drive research explorations and career training for students and practitioners.
